Managing Stress Through the Holidays

By Dr. Elisheva Neffinger

The holidays are a time of joy, love, and ... stress.

With the holidays swiftly approaching, here are some strategies and techniques to find balance and enjoy your time with loved ones.

Set Realistic Goals and Expectations

  • Avoid biting off more than you can chew, plan ahead, and learn to say no when you feel overwhelmed. Remember that it's okay if things don't go exactly to plan.

Take Care of Your Body

  • While it's okay to enjoy your favorite holiday foods, make sure you are eating well (for the most part), drink plenty of water, and exercise regularly.

Prioritize Sleep

  • Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep, and during times of stress, we may need even more. Make time for sleep, if possible--your body will thank you.

Address Stress in the Moment

  • Take deep breaths and separate yourself from stressful situations, even if just for a few minutes. Daily meditation and mindfulness practices are great tools to support stress reduction.

Identify and Ask for Support

  • Those who struggle with mental health issues may find that the holidays especially difficult. Reach out to a loved one or therapist if you need to talk. Remember that you're not alone. Many people find the holidays to be a stressful time. Be kind to others and kindness will often be reciprocated.
